Erin Engelhardt | Program Director

Erin Engelhardt was a SHAD at University of Waterloo in 1990 and has been involved with SHAD at Carleton University for the past eight years as a guest lecturer and Program Director. Professionally, Erin is a Patent Agent whose passion is working with inventors and small companies to obtain patent protection for their inventions and strategically develop their patent portfolios. In her spare time Erin loves to make things, deconstruct things, paint, garden, hike and volunteer her time in STEM education programs. Erin also writes fiction and poetry and is a voracious reader of all things scientific. Erin has an avid curiosity about the world and is ever seeking better ways to tread lightly and with joy within it. Erin is also a mother of two and wife to a fellow SHAD.

Dan Horner | Assistant Program Director

Dan has been a SHAD teacher-fellow at Shad Carleton since 2011.  In that time, he has given lectures, provided workshops and had a great time talking with hundreds of wonderful Shads. When not at Shad, Dan is busy running a very busy music department at Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill, Ontario.  With over 400 musicians participating in 7 ensembles, there isn’t much time to dream about Shad but he finds the time anyway.  Dan is also the director of the Toronto Youth Symphonic Winds which is a Toronto based group that has performed with guest musicians such as The Canadian Brass, Torq, Cadence and, this spring, The Shuffle Demons.

When musical activities are done for the day, Dan enjoys reading, golfing and is currently “trying” to learn Korean (this last part gives him legitimate reasons to listen to Kpop and watch dramas and Running Man  -  IT’S MY HOMEWORK!!!!).

Hannah Hobbs | Program Manager

Hello! My name is Hannah and I am very excited to be joining the SHAD program for the first time as Program Manager. I am a recent Carleton University graduate in Biology and Neuroscience. My main academic interests are from the Biology side of my degree, including environmental issues such as wildlife conservation and climate change. Outside of the classroom I was a member of the Carleton Varsity Water Polo team, and enjoy yoga, running and reading Harry Potter.I am currently working my way towards a career in education, and could think of no better way to spend the month of July than collaborating with, learning from and being inspired by the SHAD team and participants. I like to tackle big problems with creativity and curiosity and believe that we can all learn something new every step of the way. I am very excited to see what this year’s SHADs have to offer, and plan to ensure everyone has a fun and safe time.

Jessica Needham | Recreation Director

Hello!  I am incredibly honoured to join the SHAD team this year as the Recreation Director! I am currently a student at Carleton University studying Environmental Science with a strong interest in Conservation Ecology.  I run for the Raven’s Track and Cross Country Team, and I love always challenging myself to better my best both on and off the track.  When I’m not running, you can find me on the trails of Gatineau Park or in the Adirondack Mountains hiking and camping.  I am involved with the Outdoors Club on campus and we are always planning fun trips to get students outside no matter what their experience level is.  I am excited to meet all of you this summer and to join such a wonderful group at SHAD!

Nipun Arora | Program Assistant

Hello! I am an International student from India and I am currently pursuing Masters studies with the Institute of Cognitive Science at Carleton University. I also work with the Paul Menton Center for students with disabilities.

As someone who does not believe in siloed learning, or the distinction between art and science, I am passionate about working across disciplines. My life, education, and work have hence spanned across many terrains. I have been trained in engineering and statistics, worked professionally in data analytics and data modeling, and designed and conducted programs for sensitization towards gender and sexual minorities at workplaces through workshops and theater. I also spent a year in liberal studies when I got selected for the Young India Fellowship. It was in this fellowship that I found cognitive sciences and decided to pursue it.

In my free time, I like to read, write poetry and prose and listen to percussion music. I am very excited to be part of SHAD Carleton and look forward to the month of July. Amongst other things, I hope to have many conversations on philosophy, mind and its fascinating features, life and its complexity, statistics, physics, and politics.

Emily Wong | Program Assistant

Hello! My name is Emily Wong. I’m a fifth-year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo studying in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. I’m passionate about education, community building, and local food. I attended SHAD at McMaster University in 2011 and I grew up right here in Ottawa. As a returning PA, I (kind of!) know what I’m signing up for, which makes me even more eager to meet all of you and have another fantastic Shad Carleton experience!

Viktor Nham | Program Assistant

Hi! I’m Viktor, a fourth-year commerce student at Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business, concentrating in finance and statistics. In January 2017, I spent two weeks volunteering in Longido, Tanzania, and developed an interest in helping students innovate and realize their full potential while positively impacting their communities. So, after spending my summers and co-op terms working in industries ranging from corporate research to sports, I decided to try something new and joined SHAD as a program assistant for 2017. I love to chat about mobile technology, basketball, and fintech!

Alison Keefe | Program Assistant

Hi, I’m Alison! I was born and raised on the sandbar known as PEI, and moved to Ottawa to complete my undergrad in Engineering Physics at Carleton University. With that under my belt, I’m off to do a Master’s degree studying battery technology at Dalhousie University in the Fall. When I’m not studying, there’s a good chance you’ll find me outside reading, biking, hiking, camping, running in circles, dancing around, or just practicing headstands (new challenge). I love getting to know new people and new places and getting out of my comfort zone. I’m a Shad MUN alumna, and I’m very excited to be a part of another wonderful Shad experience!
